Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.
What might be happening?
Removing faulty wall switches that visibly spark internally when flipped on or off.
How does it work?
Small internal switch contacts can arc during operation, but visible external sparks or crackling are not something to ignore. Loose wiring or worn parts can make the situation worse.
What affects the job?
Stop using the switch if you see sparks, feel heat, or smell burning. Do not remove the cover or test it live.
What should you tell us?
What stopped working, when it happens, and any noises, heat, smells, or visible damage. Do not attempt to recreate a fault for a photo. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.
Keep safety in mind
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.
Is this what you need help with?
Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
