Ceiling Fan Installation

Mounting, wiring, and balancing new fans or replacing old fixtures.

Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.

What does this involve?

Mounting, wiring, and balancing new fans or replacing old fixtures.

How does it work?

A ceiling fan needs a secure, fan-rated mounting box as well as compatible wiring and controls. The moving blades place a different load on the ceiling support than a basic light fixture.

What affects the job?

A fan can wobble if the mounting, blades, or balance are off. Tell us whether it replaces a fan or a light, the ceiling height, and whether a fan-rated box is already in place.

What should you tell us?

A photo of the fixture and where it would go, ceiling height, and whether there is already a working light or fan there. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.

Electrical safety: Do not take apart switches, outlets, panels, wiring, or equipment based on online advice. If you notice heat, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell, stop using the affected equipment and contact a qualified electrician. For immediate danger or fire, call 911.

Keep safety in mind

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.

Is this what you need help with?

Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
