Childproof (Tamper-Resistant) Outlets

Swapping old receptacles for spring-loaded shutters that protect toddlers.

Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.

What does this involve?

Swapping old receptacles for spring-loaded shutters that protect toddlers.

How does it work?

Tamper-resistant outlets use internal shutters to make it harder for a child to insert a foreign object. The safety feature is built into the receptacle.

What affects the job?

Replacing a worn receptacle also means checking box and circuit condition. A tamper-resistant outlet does not make an unsafe cord or device safe.

What should you tell us?

A picture of the existing outlet or switch, the room where it is located, and whether the problem is new or ongoing. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.

Electrical safety: Do not take apart switches, outlets, panels, wiring, or equipment based on online advice. If you notice heat, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell, stop using the affected equipment and contact a qualified electrician. For immediate danger or fire, call 911.

Keep safety in mind

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.

Is this what you need help with?

Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
