Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.
What does this involve?
Replacing sections of legacy, paper-wrapped insulation wire with modern Romex cabling.
How does it work?
Knob-and-tube wiring uses older separate conductors and may not suit modern loads or insulation. Identification is the first step; the condition and extent vary by home.
What affects the job?
Replacement can mean access work through walls or attics and permits. Avoid assuming a small visible section is the whole system.
What should you tell us?
The warning signs you noticed, when they started, and photos from a safe distance. Do not open panels or covers to take pictures. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.
Keep safety in mind
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.
Is this what you need help with?
Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
