Recessed Lighting (Pot Lights)

Designing and installing flush ceiling lights for kitchens and living rooms.

Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.

What does this involve?

Designing and installing flush ceiling lights for kitchens and living rooms.

How does it work?

Recessed lights sit in the ceiling rather than hanging below it. LED trims and housings have different clearances, wiring requirements, and ratings for insulation contact.

What affects the job?

The spacing changes how evenly the room is lit. Ceiling access, existing wiring, insulation, and the need for new holes all affect the project.

What should you tell us?

A photo of the fixture and where it would go, ceiling height, and whether there is already a working light or fan there. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.

Electrical safety: Do not take apart switches, outlets, panels, wiring, or equipment based on online advice. If you notice heat, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell, stop using the affected equipment and contact a qualified electrician. For immediate danger or fire, call 911.

Keep safety in mind

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.

Is this what you need help with?

Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
