Two-Prong to Three-Prong Upgrades

Options for older two-slot outlets, including appropriate grounding or permitted protection.

Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.

What does this involve?

Options for older two-slot outlets, including appropriate grounding or permitted protection.

How does it work?

A three-slot receptacle does not prove a grounding conductor exists. Older two-wire circuits need a permitted grounding or protection approach appropriate to the site.

What affects the job?

The correct solution depends on what wiring is actually present. Simply installing a three-prong faceplate can create false confidence.

What should you tell us?

A picture of the existing outlet or switch, the room where it is located, and whether the problem is new or ongoing. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.

Electrical safety: Do not take apart switches, outlets, panels, wiring, or equipment based on online advice. If you notice heat, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell, stop using the affected equipment and contact a qualified electrician. For immediate danger or fire, call 911.

Keep safety in mind

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.

Is this what you need help with?

Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
