USB Wall Outlet Upgrades

Replacing standard outlets with units that have built-in USB-A and USB-C charging ports.

Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.

What does this involve?

Replacing standard outlets with units that have built-in USB-A and USB-C charging ports.

How does it work?

USB outlets put charging ports in the same wall device as standard receptacles. The electronics must fit safely in the box and meet the load needs.

What affects the job?

Some older boxes have limited room. Tell us which charging connections you want and whether the outlet has any current problems.

What should you tell us?

A picture of the existing outlet or switch, the room where it is located, and whether the problem is new or ongoing. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.

Electrical safety: Do not take apart switches, outlets, panels, wiring, or equipment based on online advice. If you notice heat, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell, stop using the affected equipment and contact a qualified electrician. For immediate danger or fire, call 911.

Keep safety in mind

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.

Is this what you need help with?

Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
